Children’s Day, a Japanese national holiday, is right around the corner (May 5th), and one of the staple decorations of this celebratory day is carp themed wind socks or kites. Koinobori (鯉幟), which means “carp streamer” in Japanese, are carp-shaped wind socks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no Sekku (端午の節句), a traditional event which is now designated a national holiday: Children’s Day or Kodomo no Hi (子供の日). The following is a set of directions to make a simply sock flag or kite and may be decorated like a carp to celebrate Children’s day, or decoracted any way you’d like to celebrate any holiday. We chose black and orange streamers to make a Halloween themed kite/wind sock.

Directions
To make your paper bag kite, you need only follow these directions.
Step 1:
Find a steady and flat surface on which to work. Lay down newspaper to keep area clean (optional). Assemble your materials.
Step 2:
Decorate your paper bag any way you’d like. Dress it up with drawings, text, glitter, stickers, googly eyes, or whatever else you can think of. Get every side so that no matter which way the wind blows, your kite will be looking good. Or draw fish scales and make your kite a carp to celebrate children’s day!
Step 3:
Cut a small hole in the bottom of the bag, right in the middle. Make this hole about the size of a dime. (This will be the top of your kite)
Step 4:
Glue two Popsicle sticks into an X shape, let dry, then tie a string or piece of yarn around the sticks. Feed this string through the hole in your bag and pull the wooden X to the top of the bag on the inside.
Step 5:
Cut your streamer(s) into foot long strips and tape these to the bottom of your kite to form a tail.
Step 6:
Enjoy your new kite. Run with it, hang it up, or let it blow in the wind.
